About the Port
The Port of Richmond is Central Virginia's domestic and international multi-modal freight and distribution gateway on the James River
serving waterborne, rail and truck shippers throughout the mid-Atlantic states.
The Port is owned by the City of Richmond and is leased to the Virginia Port Authority and is Operated by
PCI of Virginia, LLC a private company.
PCI, the operator, provides stevedoring services on a full range of Supply Chain services including export packaging and transfer, and
warehouse and inland distribution services.
The Port handles containers, temperature-controlled containers, breakbulk, bulk, and neo-bulk cargo.
James River Barge Service,
three times weekly Container-on-Barge service from
Hampton Roads to Richmond, provides a maritime alternative to I-95 by transporting goods on the James River via barges, removing
container traffic off local roads and highways.

Major export/import cargoes include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, forest products, paper, machinery, consumer goods,
frozen seafood, produce, campers, steel, steel products, stone, tobacco leaf, aluminum, project cargo, vehicles,

Facts
The Port of Richmond is located at 77° 25' west longitude and 37° 27' north latitude on the James River, 100 miles from Cape Henry and approximately 78 miles above Newport News, Virginia.
The Port is the western terminus for commercial navigation on the James River.
The Port is the westernmost commercial maritime port on the North Atlantic coast.
The Port is four miles south of the central Richmond Business District.

Pilotage is compulsory and may be obtained round the clock off Cape Henry
Vessels up to 255 feet may transit at night from Hopewell to the Port of Richmond
